The Tomato Picker - Nostalgia #16

My daughter love to go to her dear Pap's house. Aside from the reason that he let her do things "her way", she also love picking the tomatoes in his garden.
She reminds me of ME when I was a teenager. During summer vacation when school is off, I would go to my relatives in Ligao Albay, Phils and would work everyday picking tomatoes. I think the compensation then (over 20 years ago) was twenty pesos a day (an eight-hour of work under the scourging heat of the sun.) You might not believe it but it's true. While other teenagers are enjoying their summer vacation, I had to work my butt off so I would have money to buy my school things and my siblings too for the next school year. It's a joy to reminisce those experiences though, it made me stronger and stick to the saying that I believe into "Where there's a wheel, there's a way".

  1. Your hard experiences when you were younger strengthened you to be what you are today. Yes, that's a truism- when there's a will there's a way. Rylie really took off from you. She is a beautiful and charming tomato picker. Thanks for the post. God bless you all always.

  8. I remember nung high school, one of my classmates would "work" as a maid sa sarili nilang bahay, so she could buy the expensive school items (like shoes and bags). It was her personal decision to talk to her parents to do it that way. In my case naman, it was never like that kasi both my parents came from very poor families (my dad started to work at age 7 selling ice drops around their place), and he knew how difficult it was, so he decided that when it was his time to become a father, his children will just enjoy being kids. In college, brother wanted to work part time at Dunkin' Donuts, and dad didn't allow him.

Gusto ko na rin magtanim ng kamatis! Yung next door neighbor namin ang dami ng bell peppers and okra.. nakakainggit!
